Historical Bathrooms

If you have a period home and a classic style bathroom to match then try to keep your decor in tone with the style of the room. Many paint companies now include authentic historical colors from different eras in their ranges and it can be useful to focus on these when looking for ideas to decorate your classic or country style bathroom.

Brilliant white (with optical brighteners) was not a color found in paint in days gone by and the historical range paints are generally in restful subtle colors which are easy on the eye and give a relaxed feel to your bathroom.

Continue the period feel with wicker baskets for storage and a Lloyd Loom style chair (if there's room) and elaborate mirrors and picture frames (although nothing too valuable which might get spoiled by the steam). Add a few green plants and candles for accessories.

Keep Your Towels Warm

There's nothing like coming out of a shower and being greeted by a clean, warm, fluffy towel but unless you do something chances are that your family will leave wet, soggy towels around the bathroom including yours!

one way to ensure that your family's towels stay dry off quickly and are warm after a shower is to install a heated towel radiator. They come in attractive colors and shapes these days to tie in with modern bathrooms and you can also get a version which looks like an old fashioned art deco style radiator which looks better in a period style bathroom.

Many heated towel radiators have to be plumbed into the the central heating system so that they replace a normal radiator in the bathroom but you can get electric versions which would need to be wired in and fitted by a qualified electrician.

How Not To Decorate Your Bathroom

Here are 10 things to avoid if you would like a beautiful bathroom
  1. Having surfaces cluttered with every beauty product know to man or beast. Leave out only one to two essentials if any otherwise store them away in a cupboard (outside the bathroom if necessary)
  2. Letting the bathroom get really dirty before you clean it. Give a daily swish and swipe so it never looks too bad.
  3. Leaving wet towels all over the place. Install a heated towel radiator so that they dry nicely.
  4. Buying a crazy shower curtain and then not decorating the rest of the bathroom to suit.
  5. Letting your shower curtain go all brown around the bottom. Launder it weekly
  6. Not having enough storage for spare toilet rolls and cleaning products
  7. Having too much of any one decorative item. Do you really need dolphins or ducks on your shower curtain, blind, toothbrush holder, soap dish AND waste bin?
  8. Putting up with awful old-fashioned tiles. If you don't have the budget to replace them you can paint them.
  9. Running out of supplies. No good looking bathroom has an empty toilet roll or soap dispenser.
  10. Having poor lighting around mirrors. You need to be able to see properly to put on makeup or shave.

Inject Some Color with Shower Curtains

If you have one of those glass enclosed cubicles you can't use this trick with shower curtains but if you are able to use one it can work marvels. I read about it on this site full of shower curtain info.

You see shower curtains are available in all colors of the rainbow and all different kinds of designs for every taste. If you browse around you will be amazed at the variety.

Not only that, you can also use any fabric you like as long as it is washable and you use an inner waterproof shower curtain.

Knowing this you can really go to town on the design and choose something distinctive, unique and perfect for you.

Once you have your shower curtain or fabric picked out, look at the colors in it. They are designed to work together and they will provide the perfect color scheme for you room.

You could use one of the colors for the walls, one for curtains or blinds and one or two for towels and other accessories. The whole color scheme for your bathroom will work because you are tying it together with that one element - the shower curtain.

Not only have you now a distinctive design in your bathroom that you love (making your bathroom truly unique) but also a color scheme created by a designer!

Down with Boring Bathrooms

Bathrooms are pretty boring these days. I know white fittings are so much nicer than the aubergine, brown and avocado monstrosities that we used to fit in the 70s but we are running into danger of every bathroom looking the same - nice, but the same.

If you want a bathroom that is a bit more special without spending the earth then you can do that without ripping out your bath tub, sink and toilet and starting again. After all you'd probably just replace them with something that looked pretty much the same (though I do have a hankering for one of those nice vessel sinks!)

Anyway to make your bathroom look special is not a major job. It's a case of taking your plain white or neutral bathroom and decorating it in the right way - with a bit of impact.

Don't be scared to add some bathroom accessories that are a bit different - that's what makes your room unique and you'll never have a boring bathroom again.
